Shop Your Closet – 5 Ways to Style One Black Suit Without Breaking The Bank

Black Suit with Graphic Tee and Sneakers

I’ve been inspired recently by bloggers who promote shopping your own closet. Let’s face it, we don’t all have the money to update our entire wardrobe every season. I put this post together to show the tremendous amount of flexibility that a single black suit can have for your office wardrobe.

With few exceptions, the items in this post are not new. When shopping your closet, just make sure you’re pulling out items that still have life in them. Avoid faded colors and choose items with classic styling that will hold up over time and not look dated. Add a few new accessories or key pieces to give it an up-to-date stylish look. Here are a few things to avoid when shopping your closet:

  • Faded or dated colors
  • Styles that were super trendy when you bought them
  • Lapels that are too extreme
  • Items that are worn out

For this post, I pulled the following out of my closet:

  • Classic Black Suit Jacket
  • Red shell top
  • Black skirt
  • Snakeskin sandals
  • Black pumps
  • Gray pumps
  • Red pumps
  • White Stan Smith sneakers
  • Graphic t-shirt

I added the following new items:

  • Slim black pants
  • Slim Chico’s Girlfriend Jeans
  • Leopard print sling back flats
  • Beige cardigan

Style 1

Wear both the pants and the jacket together with a shell top and heels. Choose a contrasting color for a bold look, or a variation on the same color for a classy monochromatic look. In this example, I chose a cream shell with snakeskin peep toe pumps.

Style 2

Swap out a black skirt for the black pants (just make sure your blacks match), mix it up with bright pop of color and matching shoes. Here, I added a red top and bright red pumps.

Style 3

Wear the pants with a neutral top and swingy beige cardigan. Beige and camel coats and cardigans are hot this season and a flexible modern neutral to add to your closet. The cardigan in this outfit is a new item that I added to provide a dash of “now” into the mix. I added a pair of Leopard print flats, but you could just as easily wear pumps or booties in a neutral color.

Style 4

Wear the jacket with jeans, a solid t-shirt and heels. Dressed down but still put together enough for casual Friday, this is a fun modern look that transitions well from the office to an evening event.

Style 5

Wear both the jacket and pants together with a graphic t-shirt and sneakers. Here’s another casual great Friday option. Adding a few casual pieces to the mix such as a graphic tee and sneakers brings the suit down a notch, but is still work appropriate and super stylish.
