5 Tips to Succeed at New Year’s Resolutions

While many people fail at their attempts to keep their New Year’s Resolutions, it’s often because of unrealistic expectations about the level of effort, time and commitment needed to succeed. Here are a few tips psychologists recommend for succeeding at your New Year’s Resolutions.

Make a Plan

If someone asked you to do something at work, you’d likely make a plan. The plan might take the shape of a simple list, or it might be more elaborate. Treat your personal projects like your projects at work and make a plan. For example, if your New Year’s Resolution is to get your finances in order. Figure out how you’ll do that. Do some research, make a list, add due dates for items on your list and methodically check them off one by one. In my professional life I do a lot of work that involves project management. One thing we do when managing projects is identify “milestones.” These are key points within a project plan where small successes take place that step us towards project completion. So, to use a weight loss example, perhaps you set three weight loss milestones at certain points in your journey including a short term, a medium term and a long term milestone. This will allow you to feel like you are making steady progress towards your goal. Not only that, it will give you an excuse to celebrate your successes!

Identify Your “Reason Why”

It’s not enough to just want to do something. Spend some time reflecting on your “reason why.” Having a sense of purpose can help ground you and give you the motivation to keep going, even when it’s hard.

Go Easy on Your Self

We tend to be our own worst critics, which is not good for our emotional well being. We’re talking about  New YEAR’S Resolutions. That means you have an entire year to make them happen. This is not an excuse to procrastinate. Rather, it’s just a healthy way of realizing that if you lapse in your efforts, don’t worry, you have time to try again.

Be Realistic About What it Takes

We often underestimate what it takes to get something done. For example, it’s very unlikely that someone is going to lose 30 pounds in just one month. So, do yourself a favor and be realistic about what it takes to accomplish your goal. If your goal is indeed weight loss, read my posts for a few tips!

Work with a Friend

Your friends and family can be your biggest supporters. Choose a person you trust to share your goals with. In some cases, you may even be able to team up. For example, if your goal is to get in shape, maybe you can identify a walking partner. Regardless of how you choose to go about it, your friends and family want you to succeed. They can be cheerleaders, coaches, partners and even help to hold you accountable when you need it.
