Coffee is a superfood
These days, coffee is generally accepted as a superfood. It has been proven to have antioxidant properties and can help give your body the energy it needs to function properly. Coffee also contains moderate amounts of B12 and magnesium, which help regulate many bodily functions. And lastly (but certainly not leastly) coffee contains our much beloved caffeine! Not only does this little bean deliver us from drowsiness, but it improves our mood as well as providing an increased level of focus. Check out this informative Healthline article about the benefits of coffee!
Functional coffee is made with healthy add-ins, adaptogens and herbs
Functional coffee is made with healthy add-ins, supplements and adaptogens. There are different kinds of functional coffee. In fact, the sky’s the limit on what you can add to it, but some common additions include:
- Nutrition Add-ins – many people use coffee to make sure they are getting adequate healthy fats in their daily diet. I personally like a product called Nut Pods, which is a rich, creamy, sugar-free coffee creamer made from coconut and almond milk. Yum!
- Adaptogens – Adaptogens are a class of herbal supplements that help your body adapt to physical or mental stresses. According to Healthline, “Adaptogens are herbal pharmaceuticals [that] work to counteract the effects of stress in the body.” Examples of frequently touted Adaptogens are Lions Mane, Reishi Mushrooms, Siberian Ginseng, Artic Root and Schisandra. For more information about how and why Adaptogens work, check out this helpful article on healthline.com.
- Nootropics -Nootropics are compounds – some natural and others synthetic – that support cognition. In other words, they boost your brain. Nootropics are most often used to boost memory, focus, creativity, intelligence and motivation, according to Healthline.com. Some of the more well-known Nootropics are Caffeine, Ginko Biloba and Panax Ginseng.
- Supplements – You can also add supplements to your coffee such as collagen protein for healthy skin and bones or healthy fats such as MCT oil.
You can make functional coffee at home or buy it at a coffee shop
You can make functional coffee at home or buy it at a coffee shop. There’s a local coffee shop down the road from my house that makes lovely coffee drinks with a variety of mushroom powders for a healthy boost.
Functional coffee is a coffee or espresso drink that has been infused with healthy ingredients like milk, honey and even nuts. It’s meant to be an alternative to regular lattes and Frappuccinos that contain more calories and sugar than you probably want in your diet. While there are many different ways you can prepare this beverage on your own (I personally recommend using almond milk), it’s also possible to find ready-made versions at most grocery stores. NutPods is a personal favorite!
Functional Coffee Tastes Good!
Coffee tastes great and is an amazing beverage and it’s not just for health reasons. If you want to enjoy your morning cup but want to make sure that it’s also good for your body, then functional coffee is what you need.
Functional coffees taste delicious and delivers the caffeine boost that we all crave without any of the nasty additives or extra sugar found in regular coffee-shop beverages.

I have this fantastic Hamilton Beach Alexa Enabled Coffee Maker in my own kitchen. Now, to be clear, this is just a drip coffee maker. No fancy latte making capabilities here.
